Painting

Our vision of educating painters is threefold. First, our mission is to ground students in formal and technical skills and strategies giving them a foundation for the creative process regardless of the content, subject matter, or material of the outcome. Upon completion of the program, not only will students have the ability to solve problems visually with paint, but also the ability to develop their own problems to be solved according to their interests.

Second, we seek to ground our students in an awareness of the current state of painting as well as its historical and theoretical underpinnings. Students will understand how artists both shape and are shaped by culture and understand the variety of roles visual artists play within that culture.

Ultimately, our program aims to guide each artist in finding and developing his or her particular project and particular language as demonstrated by a coherent, conceptually unified body of work. Through an intense, studio-based experience, we train artists to contribute to the culture on a local, national and global scale.
